My 3 Worst Internet Marketing Mistakes

Antone Roundy posed a question on his blog some time ago. It was “What are your 3 worst Internet Marketing Mistakes?

His 3 mistakes were:

  1. Waiting to build a mailing list.
  2. Not using my mailing lists well.
  3. Not building relationships with other marketers.

Mine are slightly different so I thought I’d share them for those folks who might be more like me. :) Here they are…

  1. Not focusing and finishing
  2. Not working what was working
  3. Not building better backlinks

I’d like to break this down some more.

Not focusing and finishing

I have a confession to make. I think I am cursed.

What’s the curse? Well it’s that I understand things quickly and I’m good at a lot of things.

Why’s that a curse? It’s a curse because I find a lot of pleasure in proving that I can do almost anything, but then there’s not much pleasure for me after “I did it.” Hence finishing is mostly drudgery for me. It’s taken me a long time to find ways to learn to stay focused, overcome that feeling of drudgery and finish, but it’s the only way to succeed.

Not working what was working

Sigh. This one could be considered a consequence of what I wrote above. It’s obvious isn’t it? If something starts to work, milk it for all it’s worth right?

Yes, that’s what I should have done. When momentum started to pick up, push harder.

Not building better backlinks

This is my biggest technical error. This didn’t happen because I didn’t know it was important. Rather it happened because I didn’t push through roadblocks I had regarding many of the tactics that are taught for building backlinks.

The easier backlinking methods: too spammy. The more ‘ethical’ methods looked like they’d take forever.

I definitely did not go with the spammy methods. I just sucked it up and started building quality links… slowly – but it actually started working faster than I thought it would. Shame it took me so long to get my head in the right place.

So that’s my story – my 3 worst internet marketing mistakes. Thank God I’ve learned from them and overcome them.

Now, will you share your story? What are your 3 worst internet marketing mistakes?

My top mistake would probably have to be a lack of focus. I tend to easily get distracted with other things instead of doing what I should be doing to build my business. Two other mistakes? Poorly investing money into programs that simply don’t work, and the third would have to be not investing enough money back into my business.

    Alan,

As a starry eyed entrepreneur wannabe I certainly fell for good marketing of gimmicks and fads that had no lasting value.

And you’re right. Some things flat out don’t work, or may just be flukes that the proponents flogged purely for their own benefit.

Now that I’m well battle-scarred, I make value to the customer the cornerstone of my decisions.

    Thanks for posting!
